Foxhunting Clinic - September 23, 2023
We still have spots in the morning and afternoon portions of this exciting clinic! The morning session is for 1st flight (will gallop), 2nd flight (will canter) and 3rd flight (will canter but not jump) riders, and you'll start in the arena. You can warm up ahead of time in the arena, or take a trailride on the trails across from the clubhouse. Our huntsman Jennifer Hansen is often called a horse whisperer, and is also a very popular hunter trainer of riders and horses! Jenn will work with each rider individually, checking tack, answering questions, putting you and your horse at ease in a new environment so you both can get the most out of the clinic.
Attire: Wear the clothing and tack that you and your horse are most comfortable in, western gear is welcome! Questions, text or call Jt. MFH Theresa Lazares at 253-973-8639.
9:30 am - 11:30 am - First, Second and Third Flight Riders: In the arena, Jenn will explain how a flight is organized, from what to do if your horse is misbehaving to what to do if your horse stops at a jump; hunt protocol (order of riders), correct tack, you'll be riding singly and as a group and can jump a low jump or two if you choose to. Once Jenn is sure that everyone is comfortable, you'll go out with Jenn and our very friendly Fieldmasters who are there to help and answer questions! While we won't take hounds out, you will get to experience the thrill of riding to hounds in our beautiful hunt country! All jumps have go-arounds and are primarily natural jumps like logs.
You'll also learn what to expect in the field: First of all, all our members were once in your position, and they generally love to help out first time riders, and if you come hunt with us the next day at our Shakedown Hunt or later, you'll be introduced to your Fieldmaster as well as riders in your flight before the hunt starts and all your questions can be answered! The clinic gives you a jumpstart on having the best time you can hunting for the first time!
12:00 pm - Lecture and Lunch: Our clubhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is full of pictures and books about our history, the hunt is only a couple of years away from our 100th Anniversary! Enjoy a lunch with the other riders and listen to the Masters' of Foxhounds and Hunstman Jennifer who will discuss hunt attire, protocol, there will be examples of hunt attire and correct tack, the history of foxhunting as well as the Woodbrook Hunt Club, and we'll answer any questions that came up in the field or arena and everything else, including what the hunt staff are and what they do, our hounds, and how they hunt! And don't forget to pick up your "swag" bag of curated hunt goodies before you leave!
1:30-3:30 Afternoon Session for Hilltopper and Green Rider/Green Horse riders: This session is a multi-purpose flight for riders that only want to walk and trot, including green riders who want to see what hunting is all about at a slower pace first; seasoned riders can bring their green horse for a low-key introduction to the hunt; and for riders that are most comfortable only walking and trotting on trails but want to be able to watch the action of the hunt! The Hilltopper flight is very popular and can be our largest flight!
We LOVE introducing new riders of all disciplines to our sport, so we hope you will join us this Saturday and come back on Sunday for our Shakedown Hunt, this is an informal hunt to try out the sport and we will be hunting with our hounds!

Foxhunting in the Pacific Northwest is a thrilling, adrenaline fueled sport enjoyed not only by First Flight riders galloping on the heels of the huntsman and foxhounds, but also Hilltopper riders who enjoy watching all the action from the hilltops in a walk/trot group of friends! On Saturday, September 23rd, WHC is hosting a foxhunting clinic where you can learn about this fascinating sport and the skills, tack, attire, horses and appropriate etiquette for each foxhunting flight. Upon completion, you are invited to join the WHC Shakedown Hunt the following Day, Sunday September 24 @10 am.
We've found the biggest concern for riders interested in hunting is whether their horses will be suitable. Let's find out in a comfortable environment that will introduce horses and riders to what to expect during a hunt. This could include waiting in a group for the hounds to be released, riding in a group at various speeds, standing at a check, how close to be to the horse in front, what to do if your horse starts acting up or refuses a jump or the huntsman and hounds are coming towards you. You tell us your concerns and we'll answer as best we can and simulate what you can expect on a hunt during the mounted part of the clinic.
Our Huntsman Jennifer Hansen has organized this clinic for all levels of interested riders! The speed at which you think you'd like to hunt is the clinic section you should sign up for. We usually try to have four flights (speeds) on a hunt, First Flight walks, trots, canters and gallops and jumps; Second Flight walks, trots and canters and jumps; Third Flight walks, trots and canters and goes around the jumps; and the Hilltoppers only walk and trot.
The Clinic includes a mounted section and a classroom session where all your questions can be answered by our friendly staff! Each session is limited to 15 riders and horses, a limited number of lease hunt horses is available. The Clinic fee for adults is $200. and juniors are $150.
